The Benefits of 4K Television

When it comes to at home-viewing experiences, we’re not interested in doing things halfway! There is so much great tech available these days that’ll allow you to take your home cinema setup to the next level.

Watching shows or movies in ultra-high definition only enhances the home theatre experience, as crystal-clear picture completely immerses you in cinematic new worlds.

As TV installation experts, we are often asked about the benefits of 4K television and whether it’s worth getting. Here, we take a look!

What is 4K?

Before we jump into why it’s so great, here’s a quick refresher about what 4K actually is.

4K also referred to as ultra-high definition (UHD) is a screen resolution of 3,840 pixels x 2,160 pixels, meaning you get four times the number of pixels as you do with a HD 1080p TV.

Ultimately, higher resolution gives you a clearer picture and more vibrant viewing experience. 4K gives a level of detail that many film enthusiasts seek, making screens with 4K capabilities a great option for home cinema setups.

If you’re still not convinced, below we breakdown all the benefits of 4K!

Enhanced Clarity, Detail and Image Quality

One of the main reasons to choose 4K is something we’ve already briefly touched on – the exceptional level of clarity your screen will achieve. Tiny details are brought into focus, giving a life-like quality to the content you are watching.

Many viewers notice that the image is crisper with reduced visual noise when screened in 4K. Colours will also be more vibrant, with your TV able to offer a full spectrum of colours with new depth.

This is not only great for big blockbuster movies but will also enhance the experience when watching sport and other dynamic visuals.

A TV with a movie playing

Increased Image Depth

General image quality is not the only thing that 4K will give; you will also see a better image depth.

This makes long-distance shots more dynamic and can also give the illusion that you are watching something in 3D!

Immersive, Cinematic Experience at Home

With a greater level of detail and crisper picture-quality, your viewing experiences will be far more immersive, dropping you right into the on-screen action! All of this helps to boost your at-home cinema experience.

Home cinemas continue to become more popular, but you need the tech to back up your cinema setup!

4K TVs are a great option for home cinemas as they provide amazing next-level visuals while still being accessible to those looking to enter the world of home theatres.

Opportunity to Enjoy More 4K Content

With the popularity and availability of 4K TVs growing every year, the variety and amount of 4K content are also growing exponentially.

As 4K is the norm for most modern television sets, it seems counterintuitive to waste this on lower-quality content!

Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus are continuously adding to their online libraries of movies and TV shows that are shot in 4K, broadening your ultra-high definition horizons.

The Netflix logo on a TV

Upgrades Regular TV Viewing Experiences

As the technology progresses, we may get to a point where everything is available in 4K, but right now, when you’re watching normal terrestrial TV, it won’t be in 4K resolution.

However, a 4K TV’s processing engine can upscale regular content, improving clarity and detail across the board. Although regular content will still not be as high quality as 4K content, you will see an improvement when compared to the standard performance of a non-4K TV.

Availability of 4K HDR

4K high dynamic range (HDR) adds yet another level of detail to the content you are watching.

HDR technology is all about increasing the contrasts between colours, making the brightest whites and deepest blacks more detailed. This helps all the colours in between pop, adding new levels of vividity.

While watching something in 4K HDR, you’ll notice textures and visual nuance that would have been impossible to see on a standard TV.

4K is the Future

We’ve seen plenty of TV trends come and go over the years – who remembers the quick flash of at-home 3D TVs? Unlike the 3D tech, 4K is here to stay.

If you invest in a new TV these days, it’ll likely be 4K – this isn’t something that is just reserved for the higher-end models.

As the trend towards bigger screens continues, the number of people with 4K TVs in their homes will dramatically increase over the next few years.

With the increasing amount of 4K content, those without 4K capabilities may well start to notice that they are missing out on something.

Is 4K Worth Getting?

As you can see from the benefits, we think in most cases a 4K TV is well worth investing in, but there are some further things to consider.

If you’re not interested in having a bigger TV, getting 4K will probably not be beneficial. The size of the screen directly impacts how much 4K capabilities can shine; you won’t notice the benefits of 4K on a smaller TV, and it is not available on anything less than 40-inches.

Unsurprisingly, 4K also costs more than a regular screen. However, as 4K TVs become more mainstream, their price is beginning to plummet, and for those looking to enhance their home cinema experience, the price is worth it for the benefits provided.

If you’re now itching to get a 4K television of your own and would like some expert help when it comes to installation, get in touch with our team today!

Here a JL Audio Visual, we offer exceptional home cinema solutions, from consultation to cabling and installation, we’ll help you achieve your ultimate home cinema dreams in no time!

Should I Get a TV Aerial or a Satellite Dish?

We often take getting a good TV signal for granted, relying on signal receivers to silently provide crystal clear picture for our television screens while we watch on without giving a thought to satellite dishes or TV aerials.

If you would like to take your TV setup to the next level, here at JL Audio Visual, we offer a range of services including TV installation, cabling and satellite or aerial solutions.

A good TV viewing experience often comes down to the signal provided by your satellite or aerial. Here, we look at which is the better option is for your home.

Cost

One of the first categories that many homeowners who are looking for a more basic TV setup will consider when comparing satellite and aerials is the cost of each.

On its own, a satellite will be cheaper to install, but as satellites require an additional decoder to translate the signal the price is hiked up. This usually makes satellite installation much more expensive than aerial installation.

Most modern TVs are also sold with aerial connections, making buying and connecting an aerial far simpler and cheaper.

Satellites are more complex, meaning there will be a higher expense to ensure it is fully functioning.

Coverage and Reception Levels

Where you live can have an effect on the kind of signal you receive, and therefore, the type of signal receiver that you should install.

On the whole, a satellite will give you a better signal, especially if you live in a hilly area that is more likely to disrupt terrestrial TV services and receive poor aerial signal.

Satellite offers better coverage as signal is beamed from above and is not obstructed by the landscape, trees or buildings like land-based transmission towers would be.

For reliable, strong signal, satellite will prove the better option.

A satellite dish attached to a wall

Number of TVs

The number of televisions in your house can also affect whether you opt for a satellite dish or TV aerial.

Feeding extra TVs into an aerial is far easier than if you wanted a satellite to support more than one television. When setting up multiple TVs with an aerial, you can bring all of the cables back to the central aerial point and fit a splitter to share signal between the different rooms.

However, doing the same thing with a satellite can be a more complicated and expensive process, often making TV aerials the preferable option in this case.

TV Services and Content

The kind of content you want to watch on your TV will also have a significant bearing on the signal receiver that is best for you.

In the past, satellite services were the clear winner over free television accessed by aerial as services like Sky subscriptions offered more premium viewing experiences with exclusive sports content and movies.

However, as more and more channels and content become available through a TV aerial, satellite no longer has the monopoly on quality TV.

Subscription services accessed through the internet rather than satellite or aerial also offer more content, potentially making it more difficult to decide which option to choose.

Ultimately, your choice will come down to whichever receiver facilitates the content that you want to watch.

Reliability

The avid television watcher does not want to be interrupted by a poor or no signal notification, and so a reliable signal is also a big deciding factor.

Satellite is often more reliable as you are less likely to be affected by poor signal from disruptions such as the surrounding landscape or buildings.

However, it is also important to note that poor signal is not always down to the efficacy of your aerial or satellite. An unreliable signal can be caused by a number of reasons, down to the installation itself.

To ensure that you are giving your aerial or satellite the best chance, it is often best to get the help of seasoned professionals that know the best ways to install the equipment. If you need exceptional satellite or aerial solutions, get in touch with our team here at JL Audio Visual today.

A TV with a static screen

Poor Weather

Another potential issue that effects reliable signal can be poor weather. As satellite dishes receive signal from space, they have to pass through far more weather, which can become especially problematic when dealing with storms or more extreme weather. This can mean that your TVs signal is interrupted or lost completely.

As signal has a far shorter distance to travel when dealing with aerial receivers, they can be more reliable, especially if you live in an area prone to poor weather.

Interference

Aside from poor weather, other causes of interference can also affect how reliable your signal is. In this case, there are far more causes of interference that will mean problems for aerials rather than satellite dishes.

Interfering sources can include things from 4G and 5G to other household appliances and passing traffic. Satellite dishes are not affected by these issues.

Which is Better?

So, when it comes down to it, which is better, a TV aerial or satellite dish? Ultimately, the answer to that question will rely on what you want out of your TV experience and which factors are most important to you.

As you can see, both options have their merits and disadvantages. Although there is no clear-cut winner, hopefully, we have shown you the kind of things you should consider before making your choice.

Here at JL Audio Visual, we are dedicated to ensuring that you are provided with the best at-home viewing experiences possible. If you would like to find out more about our satellite and aerial solutions for your home, get in touch with our expert team today!

Marvel Movies Ranked

The best kinds of movies to watch in your home cinema are the ones that pack in the action and deliver dynamic visuals best enjoyed on the big screen!

With 11 years’ worth of epic superhero movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has got a lot to offer when it comes to cinema favourites. But which are the best? Here, we rank our top five movies in the MCU.

As movie aficionados and home cinema installation experts, we understand the value of a next-level viewing experience. If you think your next Marvel movie marathon could benefit from the elevated experience that a fully decked out home theatre could bring, why not get in touch to see how we could help?

Honorary Mentions

Before we explore our top five, these honorary mentions are also worthy of note!

  • Iron Man (2008): The very first MCU title and still one that holds up today.
  • Avenger Infinity War (2018) and Avengers Endgame (2019): The two parts of the ambitious crosser and overwhelming culmination of the MCU thus far.
  • Captain American Civil War (2016): A departure from the sometimes cartoonish plot of the earlier Captain America movies.
  • Captain Marvel (2019): An exhilarating origin story set in the 90s.

5. Avengers Assemble (2012)

As the film that essentially started the MCU as we have come to know and love it today, this film had to have a spot on our list.

Avengers Assemble includes the first of many crossovers as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye must protect New York from an oncoming invasion.

This film helps set up the MCU and the superhero genre as a whole, essentially introducing a new way in which we enjoy cinema. It is just the beginning of what is set up for the epic culmination of the series in Infinity War, Endgame and the future of the MCU.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Fans are no stranger to Spider-Man with both the Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield franchises, but Homecoming manages to bring a fresh iteration of the much-loved teenaged superhero.

Opting not to go for another tired Peter Parker origin story, Marvel breathes new life into this fan-favourite hero. Homecoming perfectly balances the amusing high school drama and high-action adventuring of the web-slinging hero.

3. Black Panther (2018)

Many cite Black Panther as an elevation of the genre as it rapidly became both a favourite of the fans and critics. This idea was quickly solidified when it became the first superhero movie to be nominated for an Academy Award Best Picture!

The movie was successful in executing a level of world and character building that makes it stand apart from its fellow MCU instalments. The story is absorbing and is so easy to get lost in; Black Panther is certainly a must for fans of immersive cinema.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy is, at times, gleefully self-aware of the silliness inherent to superhero movies and uses this awareness to its advantage.

The unlikely cast of characters (including a talking racoon and a sentient tree) get into continual trouble against the backdrop of a soundtrack born from the 70s and 80s.

This movie also gave us a closer look at Thanos, the ultimate advisory that the Avengers and their fellow heroes must contend with in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

1. Thor: Ragnarock (2017)

Wildly funny and visually stunning, the third instalment in the Thor franchise gets our top spot!

Ragnarock takes a departure from the over-serious Thor and Thor: The Dark World with a light-hearted adventure focused on family and redemption.

Many fans consider this to be the funniest Marvel movie so far, and director Taika Waititi seamlessly blends this humour with the action and intrigue that we have come to expect from Marvel films.

All this wrapped up with a fantastic soundtrack, and it’s no wonder Thor Ragnarock found its ways to our top spot!

If you want to watch, or re-watch, any of these superhero epics from the comfort of your own home, why not ensure your home cinema set-up is the best it can be? For further guidance about home cinema installation, get in touch with our expert team.

Why Invest in Quality Audio For Your Home Cinema

For many, the term ‘home cinema’ will conjure up thoughts of amazing visuals and unparalleled screen quality. However, it is just as important to think about good quality audio when setting up your home theatre.

As audio system installation experts, we are interested in how superior audio can elevate your home cinema experience to new levels. Here, we look at why investing in your sound system will be beneficial and help you get the most out of your entertainment system.

Realistic Sound

Systems that rely on poor-quality, internal speakers are not going to be adequate if you are trying to reach an authentic sound experience.

A top-quality system, whether this is full surround sound or more moderate speakers, will offer you an authentic audio experience with clearer, more realistic sound.

One big draw of installing a full home cinema in your house is the transportive quality of film. From the comfort of your own theatre room, you can go anywhere – this transportive element is enhanced immeasurably when you invest in quality audio.

Next-level audio will take a relatively mundane viewing experience and make it more engaging, adding to the exhilaration and suspense that movies can bring.

Increased Audio Clarity

Also adding to this realistic element of your sound, increased clarity is something to watch out for.

These days many sound systems will do a decent job at projecting clear, loud audio, but for an extra layer of clarity, it is worth seeking out a quality system that would work well in your space.

Choosing higher-end audio will allow for a multi-layered sound that doesn’t become muddy or confused. You will be able to hear distinctions in delicate dialogue and swells of music, enhancing the overall quality and experience.

The volume button on a stereo system

Mixing Options

When you opt for a higher-quality surround sound system, you will be able to control each channel and its output.

This will give you more control over the level of bass or treble settings. You will be able to customise an amazing sound to suit you. If you prefer deep rumblings or rich tones, you can achieve these preferences through one audio system.

Achieving a Cinema Experience At Home

The purpose of a home theatre is, of course, to bring the magic of a commercial cinema home.

This simply cannot be achieved fully without investing in a sound system that is capable of matching your visuals. To get the full cinematic experience, powerful audio is a must!

A commercial cinema room with people watching a film

Choosing an Audio System

Surround sound is one of the best ways to attain this kind of authentic soundscape. The multiple speakers and channels will provide all-encompassing audio that allows for a more immersive viewing experience.

Although surround sound can be quite an expensive investment, many find that it is well worth paying that little bit extra. For a more in-depth look at the benefits of surround sound, check out our blog below.

For more guidance on what kind of audio system would best suit your home cinema space and what your installation options are, why not get in touch with our team here at JL Audio Visual?

A Guide to Quality Home Audio

Whether you want an amazing multi-room audio system to blast your favourite tunes or an immersive home cinema sound experience, good quality audio is something you will need to consider.

Most of us will often focus on screen quality and leave audio as an afterthought. However, to get the best experience from your home theatre, a decent sound system is essential.

Why Invest in High-Quality Audio?

Investing in good quality audio does not necessarily have to mean breaking the bank. Finding what is right for your space and needs is more important than just buying the biggest, most expensive speakers.

Excellent audio can elevate a mundane viewing experience to cinema quality. Investing in a brilliant audio system will give you a new appreciation of sound.

What Makes ‘Good’ Audio?

A room with two tower speakers

What sounds ‘good’ is subjective, but there are certain things to be aware of and look out for when on the hunt for a next-level audio system.

Clarity

Good speakers will have an impeccable level of clarity. This means that as the speaker runs, it will produce no sound itself, leaving you to get the full-bodied, crisp audio from the music or film alone.

Bass

Bass will contribute to the clarity of low, rich sounds. A speaker system with a good bass output won’t sound muddy or wobbly when putting out those booming notes. Well-defined bass will contribute to the overall soundscape and increase listening quality.

Resolution

Resolution goes hand-in-hand with clarity and will add to the immersive experience. High-resolution audio will allow you to hear every layer of sound; you will be able to hear the distinction between different instruments and movie dialogue will be crisp.

Soundstage

Quality audio systems will be able to create a realistic soundstage, where depth and width are considered. This is another feature that will enhance the immersive nature of your audio.

Speaker Size

As previously mentioned, the speakers do not necessarily have to be the biggest to produce the best sound. If you are unsure about what kind of qualities would work best in your space, a home cinema installation professional will be able to give you some guidance.

Which Speakers are Right for You?

A closeup shot of a speaker

Nowadays, there are countless brands and speaker types to choose from that provide excellent quality.

Before deciding on what is right for you, you must consider budget, what the speakers will be used for and the space they will be projecting audio into.

Soundbars

This can often be one of the cheapest options and is preferred by many that don’t want to invest in surround sound yet.

A long horizontal speaker is placed under the television and can provide a boost in audio quality for TVs that have poor internal speakers.

Soundbars will provide better quality audio than internal speakers, but they cannot reach the same levels as more extensive systems.

Tower Speakers

Tower or floor-standing speakers can offer complete overall sound from one unit. The units will usually come in pairs to be set up together. They have a box-like structure and cannot easily be hidden, but many choose to make the speakers a feature of the room.

These kinds of speakers are generally used in rooms dedicated to listening to music, but could also be useful in a home cinema space.

Ceiling Speakers

If discretion is a concern, ceiling speakers are something to consider. They can provide better audio while being hidden away and won’t compromise the layout or design of your room.

Although they can be preferable for this reason, ceiling speakers are often unable to provide the full range of audio functions like the smooth bass or breadth that other systems can provide.

Unlike soundbars which can usually be a DIY job, ceiling speakers will usually require expert installation as fire regulations and safety need to be taken into account when these speakers are fitted.

Subwoofers

If you are focused on achieving a powerful sound full of depth, subwoofer speakers will be essential for your setup.

Subwoofers give clear sound from the low end of the audio spectrum, making them important for high-quality movie viewings.

Surround Sound Systems

Two speakers

Opting for a surround sound system can be the preferred option for people whose priority is audio for a home cinema rather than listening to music.

Essentially, surround sound will ‘surround’ you in audio through multiple channels. Different categories of sound are distributed between a number of speakers positioned around the room; this provides a super-immersive experience with clear, realistic audio.

One potential downside is that surround sound systems can land on the more expensive side of all the audio options. However, you get what you pay for, and it can be worth considering if you’re looking to take your home theatre to the next level and create an authentic cinema experience.

For a more in-depth look at the benefits of surround sound, check out our blog below!

Speaker Positioning

Positioning can be vital in getting the best from your audio system, whether this refers to surround sound or an individual speaker.

For some, it can be tempting to position speakers where they are hidden out of sight, but showcasing the speaker’s audio quality is advised. Hiding speakers too intently can cover them and prevent them from projecting audio as well as they would when unobstructed.

You must assess the room acoustics and seating positions before settling on speaker position. Installation professionals will help with this if you are unsure.

Considering the Space

The size and configuration of your space will also come into play when deciding on positioning and speaker selection.

As with the positioning of speakers, professional AV technicians will be able to advise you on the kind of speakers that will benefit the room. Large speakers placed all around the room will be inappropriate and wasteful in a small room where a soundbar or slim tower speakers would work better.

The Benefits of Surround Sound

Setting up a fully equipped home cinema means including a quality sound system. Many homeowners opt for surround sound for enhanced sound quality.

Here at JL Audio Visual, we have years of experience when it comes to surround sound and multi-room speaker systems; we know how important they are to an all-encompassing home cinema experience.

Audio is just as important as visual when it comes to achieving the best possible home theatre setup. We look at the benefits of surround sound and how it could take your at-home experience to the max!

What is Surround Sound?

The term gets thrown around a lot, but what exactly do we mean by surround sound?

The name is fairly indicative; surround sound means you are essentially ‘surrounded’ by audio. Having more than two available audio channels means that sound comes from multiple directions. Different types of sounds are categorised by mixers and distributed between speakers. One speaker’s output might focus on a film’s dialogue while another will emit the musical score.

A 5.1 audio system is touted as the best for domestic use. This means the system is split into five main speaker components, including:

• Center channel speaker
• Left and right front speakers
• Bipole speakers
• Dipole speakers
• Subwoofer

By splitting the sound like this, audio can be of a higher quality and will give a 360-degree feel.

Authentic Audio Experience

The isolated audio elements mean that sound is less muddy and more realistic. With a combination of quality visuals and audio, you can become fully immersed in a film. You’ll feel like you’re really there!

With speakers positioned at optimal points around the room, viewing experiences can feel more engaging. When audio is coming from behind you and either side of you, it can add to the overall excitement or suspense of the movie.

Increased Overall Quality

Surround sound can provide richer and more pristine tones. There is a very noticeable sound difference when compared to a basic speaker system.

This kind of system will mean the clarity of your audio is better than ever. Hearing overlapping dialogue clearly will be no issue and you will get the full impact of explosive or audibly dynamic scenes.

Customisation Options

With more audio channels, there are more opportunities for custom sound levels. You will be able to adjust each speaker to suit your tastes and specifications.

Bass or treble settings can easily be adjusted; mono or stereo speakers may not have the same kind of scope when it comes to customisation. If you are investing in a full home cinema experience, you will want it to be on your terms and to your specifications!

Closer to Real Cinema Experience

Going to the cinema is enjoyable because you are receiving a heightened viewing experience. But what if you could bring this kind of next-level experience home?

Surround sound can help you achieve this. The true cinema experience does not just involve a big screen. Film aficionados will want to be blown away by sound as well as on-screen action! The ability to clearly hear the deep rumbles of the bass and clarity of dialogue will help you achieve this cinematic effect from the comfort of your own home.

Other Options

Surround sound is by no means the only audio option despite its many benefits. The downside is that surround sound systems can be quite pricey, but if you are willing to invest in them, it can be well worth the cost!

If you’re biding your time and evaluating your options, a soundbar may be something to consider. These speakers can be much cheaper and will provide better sound than a TV’s internal speakers. They will not provide the all-encompassing experience that surround sound can, but they can be effective at giving high-quality audio before deciding to invest in something more extensive.
